People don\u2019t only care if something is purchasable online \u2014 they want to know <strong>where it\u2019s on view<\/strong> so they can sit in a chair, test a sofa, or see an artwork in person. Right now, schema.org has no clean way to express that reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The gap in schema.org<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/docs\/schemas.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/docs\/schemas.html\">Schema.org<\/a> already gives us a very good framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Product<\/strong> to describe the item.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offer<\/strong> for availability and price.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>availability<\/strong> values like InStock, OutOfStock, or InStoreOnly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But InStoreOnly \u2260 <strong>on display<\/strong>.<br>InStoreOnly only says you can go to a store and buy it; it does <strong>not<\/strong> say the item is actually around for you to view, try and test and experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An item can be \u201cin store only\u201d but still boxed in the stockroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An item can be <strong>on display<\/strong> even if it isn\u2019t for sale (e.g., a limited-edition sample).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters both for consumers and businesses, visitors and museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What this looks like for museums and artworks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/VisualArtwork\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/VisualArtwork\">VisualArtwork<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;covers what the work&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;(artist, medium, edition, etc.). It doesn\u2019t state whether it\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>on view now<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Museum\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Museum\">Museum<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;models the venue (hours, address, geo). It doesn\u2019t list which works are&nbsp;<strong>currently on display<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ExhibitionEvent\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ExhibitionEvent\">ExhibitionEvent<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(with&nbsp;<code>workFeatured<\/code>) can say which works appear in a&nbsp;<strong>named show<\/strong>&nbsp;with dates \u2014 great for special exhibitions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/contentLocation\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/contentLocation\">contentLocation<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;on CreativeWork is about the&nbsp;<strong>depicted place<\/strong>, not whether the work is hanging on a wall today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality in museums: many works are on&nbsp;<strong>permanent display<\/strong>&nbsp;or rotate in and out of view without a formal exhibition. There\u2019s no simple, machine-readable switch for&nbsp;<strong>\u201con view now at this museum.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the key user question remains unanswered:&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIs this artwork on view here today?\u201d<\/strong><br>One of schema.org\u2019s strengths is being explicit &#8211; so why don&#8217;t we help millions of people allowing for an explicit answer to this question, too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why we propose&nbsp;&#8220;<strong>onDisplay&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of schema.org\u2019s strengths is that it makes things&nbsp;<strong>explicit<\/strong>. Today, it cannot explicitly answer whether a product or artwork is physically viewable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding an&nbsp;<strong><code>onDisplay<\/code>&nbsp;property<\/strong>&nbsp;would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give consumers a direct, unambiguous answer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help retailers and museums highlight what\u2019s truly visible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support richer and less frustrating search experiences \u2014 for example:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cWhere can I try the Vitra Eames Lounge Chair in Berlin?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhich Picasso paintings are currently on view in Amsterdam?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, it makes the internet more useful for anyone who values&nbsp;<strong>physical presence and experience<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 a need that spans retail, culture, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make this concrete, we\u2019ve drafted a&nbsp;<strong>namespace proposal<\/strong>&nbsp;that shows how&nbsp;<code>onDisplay<\/code>&nbsp;could be applied to&nbsp;<code>Product<\/code>,&nbsp;<code>Offer<\/code>, and&nbsp;<code>VisualArtwork<\/code>.
